Justice Isagani Cruz's dissenting opinion in the Marcos vs Manglapus case (1989) says it all:
Nothing important has happened to change my vote for granting the petition. The death of Marcos has not plunged the nation into paroxysms of grief as the so-called "loyalists" had hoped. By and large, it has been met with only passing interest if not outright indifference from the people. Clearly, the discredited dictator is in death no El Cid. Marcos dead is only an unpleasant memory, not a bolt of lightning to whip the blood.
This only shows that if he was at all a threat to the national security when he was already moribund that feeble threat has died with him. As the government stresses, he has been reduced to a non-person (which makes me wonder why it is still afraid of him). His cadaver is not even regarded as a symbol of this or that or whatever except by his fanatical followers. It is only a dead body waiting to be interred in this country.
This is a tempest in a teapot. We have more important things to do than debating over a corpse that deserves no kinder fate than dissolution and oblivion. I say let it be brought home and buried deep and let us be done with it forever.
Yes, the right to be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani is another issue but Marcos was once a great president, loved and revered not just by Filipinos but people around the world as well. And then the Filipino people started to take away that glory from him and tried their best to pulled him down. They had seen enough, they wanted that piece of glory, too. And yes Marcos had all kinds of cronies and corruptions back then, but he was a great statesman, seeing to it that he is doing great in leading and administering the country, unlike the president you voted in 2004 who had also all kinds of cronies and corruption but did not see to it that she was doing a good job in leading the country.
Ferdinand Marcos was a great President and is one of the best, if not the best, Presidents we ever had. Unfortunately, the infamous saying holds true -- a single mistake will be better remembered than all the great things done.
Let us allow him to be buried in the place where he deserves to be, and let us move on from this dark spot of our history.
God bless the Philippines :)
The danger is - people might forget the bad things he did.
